Testimonials from previous Advance! Conventions

  • I had such a blast playing in this game, commanding the right flank for the rebels. I lost an entire line of foot in one shot to devastating cannon fire, and barely managed to hold on as my fellow commanders seized the day on the left and center flanks. Thanks so much to Bill, Wade, John, Owen, Jon, and Chuck for a great battle and warm welcome to the hobby.

  • DBA Free Play from HMGS-PSW

Time: All Day Gamemaster: HMGS-PSW Ruleset: DBA 3.0 Scale: 15mm Max Players: N/A

What began as an experimental fastplay game for a Society of Ancients convention has become over time “one of the most influential wargames rule sets of recent times.”  Games such as Imipetus, Sword and Spear, To the Strongest! And Triumph! all owe their mechanics to the original DBA rules.

DBA 3.0 is an ancient and medieval period wargame played on a small board, using a minimal number of model figures and the simplest set of rules that can produce a historically and visually realistic and exciting game.

Join the members of HMGS-PSW at Advance!, bringing your army or a spirit of learning to delve into the world of De Bellis Antiquitatis!

  • Mordheim - The Clattering

Time: All Day Gamemaster: David McLay & Tyler Pierce Ruleset: Mordheim Scale: 28mm Max Players: 10

This is a spin-off of Mordheim, City of the Damned.  Choose your fantasy warband and explore the ruins of a city smashed by a meteorite.  Fight NPC monsters, other player warbands, or form alliances as you seek to complete your objective, side quests, and collect valuable wyrdstone.  Buy new weapons from vendors in game to become more powerful and feared by your foes.  Resurrect fallen comrades, hunt monsters, and battle for glory as you navigate thru the darkened streets of Mordheim.

This is a drop-in/out game, so players can come and enjoy then hit the pause button if they want to explore other games.  Anyone can come back without penalty or loss of content any time for as long as they want.

Gamemasters will provide warbands for players who want to learn or try Mordheim, as well as all the needed dice.  Players just need a great attitude for a fun day!

  • Battle of Asculum

Time: 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Gamemaster: Anthony Nicklo Ruleset: Age of Hannibal Scale: 6mm Max Players: 6

The Battle of Asculum was a poorly documented battle that took place near Asculum (modern Ascoli Satriano) in 279 BC, and was thought to have lasted either one or two days, between the Roman Republic under the command of the consuls Publius Decius Mus (who by some accounts died before the battle) and Publius Sulpicius Saverrio, and the forces of King Pyrrhus of Epirus. The battle took place during the Pyrrhic War, after the Battle of Heraclea of 280 BC, which was the first battle of the war. There currently exists accounts of this battle only by three ancient historians: Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Plutarch, and Cassius Dio, although these historians in turn reference other historians whose work is now lost. Asculum was in Lucanian territory, in southern Italy. The Battle of Asculum was the original "Pyrrhic victory". The result of the battle is not definitively known, with Plutarch stating that it was a pyrrhic Greek victory, Cassius Dio recording it as a Roman victory. The constituents of both armies are also poorly known, with each historian offering largely divergent estimates for the strength of the armies or the length of the battle.

  • The 7th Wellington-Bodley-Smythe Memorial Hypostile

Time: 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM (may go into afternoon period) Gamemaster: Alex Bagosy Ruleset: A Fine Day for a Ride Scale: 1/56 Max Players: 8

Seven years ago, the world of competitive velocipede racing was set on its head by the unfortunate death of the 6th Baronet Wensleydale, lost to us due to an unfortunate accident involving his penny-farthing, a buxom lass, his lordship's unbridled gallantry, and a dog cart full of expired Gentleman's Relish.

In his honour, we invite ladies, gentlemen, and gentry of good breeding to attend the first race of the season, a run of his favourite route through one of Britain's most beautiful garden cemeteries, the very same where he met his unfortunate end. Household servants and knock-up men of good moral standing will know the location, which we of course cannot disclose within this missive. Drasines, Tricycles, Penny-Farthings, and similar velocipedes accepted, so long as they meet our rigorous safety standards.

The course will begin at 10am and consist of two to three laps. Beware the usual risks of public garden cemeteries: boisterous children, the intoxicating smell of meat pies, Belgians, that sort of thing. Perhaps the 6th Baronet will join us himself. He has a tendency to do that from time to time.

A lion or other beast from the untamed lands may make an appearance as well... Players can come and go as they like, fighting a round or two and then moving onto another game at the con! All dice, figures and components provided. Who will be the overall victor this day?

Tribal is a dice-free skirmish game! Rules are easy to learn!  Although the rules can be employed for periods throughout the colonial era, this game will focus on Pasifika – the various Polynesian empires and kingdoms which waged battle across the Pacific Ocean.

You’ll either play as an invading faction led by the ali’i nui (King), seeking to expand his influence by conquering a rival island, or as the opposing faction, whose me’e (Heroes) and Koa (Warriors) will follow their ali’i nui to the end in defending their village.

Embrace your inner Koa and greet your enemies with a lusty Mahalo before opening them up with your shark-toothed club!!!

Zululand, 1879 – Empires Collide The mighty Zulu warriors rise to defend their lands against an imperial invader, while the British pray their relief column arrives in time. Who will triumph in this desperate clash of cultures and steel?

The Moon, 2190 – The Battle for Humanity’s Future As Earth withers under an unforgiving sun, the last superpowers fight for control of the lunar surface—the final stepping stone to the stars. The future of humankind may be decided in the cold, airless expanse of the Moon.

Three battles. Three eras. One system.

Using One-Hour Skirmish Wargames and One-Hour Ancient and Medieval Skirmish Wargames, these fast-paced scenarios offer easy-to-learn rules and exciting tactical play. Each game lasts 30 to 60 minutes—jump in for one battle or fight through all three.

It's time for comic con and you and your crew are headed down to buy some exclusives, get some autographs and sit through some panels. But what is that over there? Cosplayers! They're going to get in line in front of you to buy the last exclusive, annoy your favorite artist and make your convention experience terrible. Time to get their cat ear wearing heads into headlocks and drag them away from the convention center. I also heard that one of the other gangs invited them. We should probably teach them a lesson as well.

Wild In The Streets is a fast and furious game of gangs of youth subcultures battling it out. This scenario is played on a 3x3 table. All terrain, minis, tokens, etc will be supplied by the GM. Bring your favorite d10s if you are particular about dice.
